Planetary movements

In the night sky, we have star patterns which have more or less remained constant since a considerable time in human history. We have seen some very easily identifiable once in my earlier posts about Orion and Canis Major and trust me, those posts were just the trailer. There are more famous star patterns in the sky which one can constantly observe and they never change.

However there are some tiny dots in sky which keep moving around. On the backdrop of these fixed star patterns, their movement gets highlighted even more. These illuminated ones are called the "Planets" - the word having its origin in Greek language where it literally means Wanderer !

Now these planets revolve around Sun just as our Earth does. Since they are much closer to us as compared to other stars, their movement in space appears more prominent than those distant stars. Planets move in their own orbits, however sometimes they appear to come close to each other. In reality, they are thousands of miles apart, but just from an observer's point of view, they seem approaching each other, or sometimes even crossing over each other's paths. This phenomenon where planets appear next to each other is called Conjunction and its one of the sought after events in the night sky.

Even in lighted city sky, So far I have seen 5 planets with my naked eyes.

1. Venus
2. Mars
3. Jupiter
4. Saturn
5. Mercury

In my next posts, I'll try to publish individual images of these Planets captured using Iphone. It is not possible to provide specific locations for these planets as they keep moving around. But I'll have some commentary about other objects if I capture them along with the planets at the time of taking the picture.
